Meet the Americans who can't retire
  + stars: | 2024-03-23 | by ( Juliana Kaplan | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +12 min
More people over 65 are working as pensions disappear, people live longer, and Social Security benefits are seemingly always in peril. Business Insider spoke with several Americans of retirement age about why they are still trading their time for money. "I think older people become very invisible, and maybe it's going to take other older people to help heighten that visibility." On average, Americans who have pensions receive $25,000 annually from them; the average estimated annual Social Security benefit is $38,418 for 2024. Indeed, BI's analysis of retirement data has found that nearly 80% of retirees have Social Security income.

What did Kurt Vonnegut, the novelist, and François Mitterand, the socialist president of France from 1981 to 1995, have in common with Donald Trump? Both, at some point, believed in what economists call the lump of labor fallacy. And Trump clearly shares that belief. As I noted in my most recent column, it underlies his hostility to immigration — well, that and his belief that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country.” It also underlies his protectionism. So this seems like a good time to talk about the lump of labor fallacy, how we know it’s a fallacy and why it’s a zombie — an idea that refuses to die and instead keeps shambling along, eating people’s brains.

NEW YORK (AP) — Tim Dorsey, a former police and courts newspaper reporter who found lasting fame as the creator of the crime-comedy novel series starring Serge A. Storms, an energetic fan of Florida history and an ingenious serial killer, has died. Dorsey, who published 26 novels, died Sunday, according to Danielle Bartlett, a publicity director at William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins. Fans of Dorsey appreciated his clever observations and satirical pokes at the weirdness of Florida. He was part of a trio of former newspapermen from Florida — including Dave Barry and Carl Hiaasen — who found a rich vein of absurdist humor in the state. “It was a privilege and honor to work with Tim Dorsey.

I told my speech therapist that I was frustrated that I haven’t been able to write fiction since experiencing a traumatic brain injury — which means that I am still, after nearly two years, unable to do my job. Over 1.5 million Americans experience a traumatic brain injury each year. The toll of traumatic brain injuries and the mystery of how the brain repairs itself, or doesn’t, is still perplexing and under-researched. I had to invent a new process in order to tackle the project: ideas inscribed one at a time, thought by thought, sentence by sentence, on note cards, each composed over days, weeks, months. Once there was a queen who fell under a spell, causing her to sink into a deep sleep for a long, long time.

In ‘The Future,’ Earth Barrels Toward Fiery Destruction
  + stars: | 2023-11-07 | by ( Ian Wang | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
THE FUTURE, by Naomi AldermanThere are few figures in the Bible more cruelly evocative than Lot’s wife, who is transfigured into a pillar of salt for looking back at Sodom. Early in her novel, a woman is frozen to death with a chemical refrigerant made of paramagnetic salts: a Lot’s wife for the Information Age. Alderman’s Sodom is our own polarized, plutocratic world. Whether by divine will or not, “The Future” finds the earth barreling toward fiery destruction. But no such fever pitch is reached in Alderman’s new novel, whose outlook is decidedly more reformist than revolutionary.

Coincidentally, Sayre also wrote about “The Joy of Sex” for The Times, including it in a round-up of sex manuals (which was headlined “Ahh!”). Here, though, she was most definitely interested in the graphics. ‘I understand,’ she said, ‘that you have “The Joy of Sex” — unillustrated.’” There was no such thing, of course; the art in “The Joy of Sex,” as the Book Review noted, “may have had just a little to do with its phenomenal sales.”That wasn’t true of “Breakfast of Champions,” which soared onto the best-seller lists on its literary merits alone. It’s just an agreeable thing to do, and I recommend it to everybody. I always say to people, practice an art, no matter how well or badly, because then you have the experience of becoming, and it makes your soul grow.”

Penguin Random House is suing a Florida school district and board after it banned certain books. Penguin Random House has joined forces with an authors' group to sue a Florida school district after it banned a number of books. Books removed or restricted by Escambia include "The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison, "Slaughterhouse-Five" by Kurt Vonnegut, and "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. All have had books removed from libraries or had student access restricted by the district, PEN America said in a press release. "The book removals and restrictions enacted by the School District and School Board are denying students access to books they would like to read, or chilling such access."
A selection of books including "The Bluest Eye," by Toni Morrison, that have been the subject of complaints from parentsPenguin Random House, authors, parents and an advocacy group filed a lawsuit Wednesday against a Florida school district for removing 10 books related to race and the LGBTQ community after a high school teacher complained. In addition to the publishing house, PEN America, a nonprofit group that advocates for free expression in literature, five authors whose books have been removed from the district, and two parents whose children go to school in the district filed the suit against the Escambia County School District and the Escambia County School Board in Pensacola, Florida. "The clear agenda behind the campaign to remove the books is to categorically remove all discussion of racial discrimination or LGBTQ issues from public school libraries. Neither the district nor the school board immediately returned requests for comment. More than 100 other titles are restricted and require parental approval for access.
